Why barriers to entry are your friend

These Holiday Rental Mastery articles are dedicated to giving information to vacation rental owners who want to succeed way beyond their competitors.  For owners who want to move from modest occupancy to 90% occupancy, which I know from 18 years experience is routinely possible.

To stand out and succeed ahead of your competitors, you will need to do things that your competitors don’t bother to do. Some of this is easy, knowing what to do, and flicking a few switches.   Some are more advanced techniques.

However, many of these advanced techniques are challenging to start with.  They take a knowledge source like these articles, a book or a mentor.  Advanced techniques take learning, sometimes investment of money, and above all persistence.

In short there are barriers to entry for these advanced processes. For the most part, they seem harder than they actually are, particularly for those of your competitors who don’t like working through change.

These barriers to entry are your friend.  When you master them, you will stand out above your less motivated competitors and succeed in a very crowded marketplace.

Barriers to entry are your friend

Each time you see a small challenge, think of it as your friend, another little barrier to entry for your competitors.

I love little barriers to entry.  Like everything else, each one takes a little knowledge and effort.  Many competing VR owners won’t make the effort.  All the better for you.  You make the small effort, you stand out from your competitors.

What are example of barriers?

Small things that you choose to do that your competitors don’t:

  • A local insiders guide for guests
  • Personal contact during and after your guests stay
  • Little extras for your guests during the stay that your competitors don’t provide
  • Professional photos
  • An interesting name for your rental that your guests remember after your stay
  • A theme for your rental with books and images around that theme that your guests enjoy
  • A newsletter
  • A simple website
  • Easy online direct booking

Each one of these is no magic bullet, nor a major investment, but put together they push you far ahead of your less active competition and bring you more bookings.

So why am I writing these articles?

I am writing a book “Holiday Rental Mastery”, now in draft, and I am developing courses to sell worldwide later in 2018.  The book curates all the articles and much much more.  The courses make the harder techniques easy and fast to implement.  The website implementing course is an example.

I’ll keep you updated as the book and courses are ready to release.
